Smile Freely Instead of Hiding: 5 Misalignments Modern Orthodontics Corrects

Gummy smile, gaps between teeth, crooked teeth: Dr. Hakim shows 5 misalignments that modern orthodontics in Frankfurt corrects discreetly. Smile freely now.

The hand that drifts up to your mouth as if by chance when you laugh. The reserved smile in every photo, lips kept firmly closed. The reflex of turning away slightly when you speak. Many people hide their smile – often for years, often without consciously noticing it.

Freedom is a big word in our everyday lives. But how free are you really if you can’t smile freely? As a specialist in orthodontics in Frankfurt, I see every day in my practice how strongly a smile shapes the way we come across and how confident we feel. And how often there is a specific, treatable misalignment of the teeth or jaw behind it.

In the video: Dr. Mohammad Hakim explains personally which misalignments lead us to hide our smile – and how modern orthodontics can help.

Why we hide our smile – and what that does to us

I’m not a psychologist, and I want to say that clearly up front. There are many reasons why a person doesn’t feel free, and some of them belong in other hands. But there is one large area where we orthodontists can make a real difference: when the cause lies in the mouth.

Anyone who feels their smile isn’t “presentable” withdraws without realizing it. You laugh less heartily, speak more reservedly, avoid photos. That comes across as distant to others – and above all it has an effect on the inside. That’s exactly why I see again and again that after orthodontic treatment, patients don’t just have straight teeth, but visibly more radiance. Suddenly they smile of their own accord, without giving it a second thought.

Let’s take a look at the five most common misalignments that can be behind this.

1. Gummy smile – when too much gum tissue is visible

One of the best-known reasons why many people don’t laugh from the heart is the so-called gummy smile. Here, a lot of red gum tissue becomes visible when smiling. The lip pulls up too far, or the upper jaw with the teeth sits too low. The result looks unbalanced: too much gum tissue, and as a result the teeth often appear too short.

The causes vary. Sometimes the upper jaw bone (maxilla) has grown in an unfavorable direction. In other cases there is an overgrowth of the gums – which can also be a reaction to certain medications or an illness. That’s exactly why a careful analysis always comes first: only when we know the cause can we treat in a targeted way.

The good news: not every gummy smile automatically means major surgery. With modern methods – for example small mini screws placed above the teeth – the teeth can be moved upward in a controlled way. In many cases, this means an operation can be avoided. And if a surgical procedure is necessary after all, orthodontics comes first so that the starting position is well prepared.

2. Crooked teeth – straightening instead of grinding down

The most obvious reason why someone hides their smile is uneven or crooked teeth. Here the solution is pleasantly clear: we can straighten the teeth, upright them and bring them into a harmonious position – without touching the tooth structure at all.

That’s an important point. Many people believe that a beautiful smile inevitably requires veneers or elaborate prosthodontic work in which healthy teeth are ground down. In very many cases, that isn’t necessary at all. Once the position of the teeth has been corrected, professional bleaching can follow if desired – and your own natural teeth shine. A natural-looking smile with real teeth, without unnecessary compromises.

3. Gaps between teeth – trademark or nuisance?

When it comes to gaps between the teeth, opinions differ – and that’s completely fine. Some people love their natural gap. It’s their trademark, part of their personality, and they don’t want to lose it under any circumstances. In cases like these, there is no reason for treatment. For me, honest advice also means: not treating where nothing is bothering you.

It’s a different story when a gap is felt to be clearly bothersome – for example because it stands out when speaking, affects pronunciation, or simply means that someone no longer enjoys smiling. Then we can close the gap in a targeted way and create a harmonious overall picture. The result is usually more than just a visual effect: many patients carry themselves noticeably more confidently afterward.

4. Teeth that are too covered – when barely any tooth shows when you smile

The opposite of the gummy smile is just as much a topic: some people show too little of their teeth when they smile. The lip covers almost the entire row of teeth, which makes the smile look less open and lively.

Here we proceed with a differential diagnosis. The question is: is there a beautiful aesthetic solution without false compromises – or does it make more sense to move the teeth orthodontically so that more tooth structure becomes visible again when smiling? We weigh this up individually, always with the goal of achieving a natural and coherent result.

5. A narrow smile – black triangles at the corners of the mouth

Most people are actually affected by this misalignment, and yet many don’t even know it by name. With a narrow smile, the teeth are only properly visible at the front, while the back teeth are positioned too far inward. This narrowing creates dark areas at the corners of the mouth – the so-called black triangles. As a result, the smile looks narrow and less radiant.

By gently widening the dental arch and bringing the back teeth into a harmonious position, we fill in exactly these areas again. The smile becomes broader, fuller and more open – an effect that is often surprisingly noticeable.

Discreet ways to a new smile

Almost all of these treatments can be arranged today so that they barely stand out in everyday life. For many patients, that’s the decisive point – especially in jobs with a lot of client contact or in prominent positions. There are two solutions we use particularly often for this:

  • Lingual fixed braces: They are attached to the inside of the teeth and can’t be seen from the outside. They work around the clock, without you having to put anything in or take anything out.
  • Aligners (clear aligners): Virtually invisible, removable and comfortable to wear in everyday life.

The best part comes before treatment even begins: with a digital 3D simulation we show you what your smile will look like in the end – very concretely, with your face and your new teeth. That way you can see your before and after before you decide on a treatment.

Frequently asked questions about smiling & misaligned teeth

What is a gummy smile and what can be done about it?

A gummy smile is when a lot of gum tissue becomes visible when you smile – usually because the upper jaw sits too low or the gums have overgrown. After a careful analysis of the cause, it can often be treated orthodontically, for example with mini screws that move the teeth upward. In many cases, this makes surgery avoidable.

Can gaps between teeth be closed without veneers?

Yes. In many cases, gaps between teeth can be closed purely with orthodontics by moving the teeth into the right position – without grinding down healthy teeth or using veneers. Whether that is the right path for you is something we clarify in an individual analysis.

What are “black triangles” in a smile?

Black triangles are the dark areas that appear at the corners of the mouth when the back teeth are positioned too far inward. This makes the smile look narrow. By gently widening the dental arch, these areas are filled in again, and the smile becomes broader and more harmonious.

Are the braces visible during treatment?

Not necessarily. With lingual braces placed on the inside of the teeth or with clear aligners, the treatment is barely or not at all noticeable from the outside. For adults who value a discreet appearance at work or in private life, these are ideal solutions.

How can I see in advance what my smile will look like after treatment?

With a digital 3D simulation. We create a precise 3D scan of your teeth and show you on screen how your result can look – including your face. That way you make your decision on a clear, visible basis.
