Straightening teeth with fixed braces

Well-cared-for teeth are a symbol of joy, success and self-confidence. At the same time, misaligned teeth are a widespread problem. Fortunately, malocclusions can be treated well today - thanks to modern tooth corrections tailored to the individual wearer. Fixed braces are a proven and highly effective solution for treating a wide range of malocclusions.

‍

What exactly are fixed braces?

Fixed braces for adults are a form of tooth correction that you cannot remove yourself - which means they stay in your mouth for the duration of the treatment period. Fixed braces are particularly suitable when more severe malocclusions are to be treated. Here, fixed braces are an effective method of moving your teeth into the right position. The braces consist of what are known as brackets - made either of metal or of ceramic - which are attached to your teeth. A wire is then fitted into the brackets, which corrects your teeth effectively. Fixed braces can already be used in children and adolescents. However, fixed braces should not yet be used on a set of baby teeth. In that case, the braces could interfere with the growth of the permanent teeth.

‍

What are the benefits of fixed braces?

Fixed braces act more strongly on your teeth than other tooth corrections. That is why severe malocclusions can also be corrected effectively with fixed braces. It is straightforward, for example, to close gaps between teeth with fixed braces. Entire groups of teeth can also be treated most effectively with fixed braces. Thanks to the construction of fixed braces, which consist of brackets and bands or wires, the braces can be continuously adapted to the changing needs of your teeth - and very precisely so. The high degree of precision of the treatment makes it possible to set treatment goals exactly and to give detailed forecasts of how the treatment will progress. Because fixed braces act on the teeth 24 hours a day, a faster treatment result is possible than with other forms of tooth correction.

‍
As the wearer of fixed braces, you do not have to think about when to take them out, and you cannot lose them.

How treatment with fixed braces works

As your dentist for tooth correction, it is important to us to make the entire treatment period as pleasant as possible for you. You should feel as comfortable as possible with your fixed braces in everyday life, too. That is why we keep our treatments very transparent - we always inform you about every step of the treatment. And if anything is unclear, you are welcome to talk to us at any time.

‍

Here we offer you a first insight into how treatment with fixed braces proceeds:

Initial consultation: In an initial consultation we explain to you how fixed braces work and consider together whether this option is fundamentally right for you.

‍

Precise examination and diagnosis: We then examine your teeth in detail in order to determine the extent of your malocclusion. The examination is usually low in discomfort and we take enough time to gain a comprehensive impression of the condition of your teeth. The precise diagnostics carried out by our specialists in orthodontics serve as the basis for the further treatment and are essential to the success of your treatment. On the basis of this examination and diagnosis, we draw up your individual treatment plan.

‍

3D visualization of your teeth: With the help of 3D models and before-and-after images, we give you a realistic impression of the treatment result. This also allows us to plan the treatment particularly precisely from an aesthetic point of view.

‍

Receiving your fixed braces: At a further appointment, we attach the braces, specially adapted to your needs, to your teeth.

‍

Wear instructions and check-up appointments: Since these are fixed braces, they are worn permanently. For your daily tooth and oral hygiene, there are special cleaning methods to keep in mind, which we are happy to explain to you in advance. Every few weeks there is a check-up appointment at our practice, where we look at the progress of your tooth correction together and readjust the braces if necessary.

‍

Treatment time with fixed braces

The treatment time depends on the type and severity of the malocclusion as well as on the desired result. On average, the therapy takes approx. 1-3 years including the follow-up phase. In general, treatment with fixed braces is considered a particularly intensive and therefore also fast-acting form of tooth correction.

‍

Fixed braces: metal brackets vs. ceramic brackets

With your fixed braces, you can choose between metal brackets and ceramic brackets. Metal brackets are the more affordable option. They are made of a low-nickel, well-tolerated material and are used at any age. Ceramic brackets are less visible thanks to their white color. Because ceramic is a very hard material, it is not suitable for every malocclusion. In our initial consultation, we weigh up together which brackets are best suited to you.

FAQs - frequently asked questions about fixed braces

How much does treatment with fixed braces cost?

What fixed braces cost depends on the condition of your teeth and on the duration of the treatment. As a general rule: the more severe the malocclusion, the longer the treatment takes and the more often the braces have to be readjusted. This results in higher costs than a shorter course of treatment.

Does health insurance cover the cost of fixed braces?

For children, statutory health insurance covers part of the cost. The malocclusion has to correspond to at least KIG (orthodontic indication group) 3. For adults, statutory health insurance only covers the cost of fixed braces if the diagnosis indicates that surgical treatment of a dysgnathia is required. Better materials can also be used in order to lower the risk of tooth decay and painful treatments. In a detailed consultation we will explain the available options to you.

Who is treatment with fixed braces suitable for?

Fixed braces are suitable for children and adolescents as well as for adults. They can be used for almost all malocclusions, as they can be adjusted very flexibly and can also correct severe misalignments. In children who still have their baby teeth, treatment with fixed braces should be avoided, as fixed braces can interfere with the growth of the teeth. Fixed braces are therefore better suited to older children. Whether fixed braces are right for you is something we decide together in an initial consultation. We are happy to take the time for all your questions and concerns - you can ask us anything that matters to you, so that we can respond to your needs in a suitable way.
