Removable braces: particularly suitable for children
For our younger patients, removable braces offer a high level of comfort. Are you an adult who is also interested in removable braces? Then let us advise you - we offer suitable alternative treatment methods in line with your wishes, for more flexibility and comfort in everyday life.
What exactly are removable braces?
Removable braces are an orthodontic appliance that you can put into your mouth and take out again at any time - even without an appointment with your orthodontist. Removable braces are ideally suited to treating mild to moderate malocclusions. In children, for example, they are also used as a space maintainer as part of early treatment. In adults, they can be used as so-called retention appliances to secure the treatment result once the therapy is complete.
What differences are there between removable braces?
There are various types of this orthodontic appliance. So-called active plates, which can be adjusted with clasps, screws and wires, provide gentle correction of malocclusions on a small scale. This option is particularly well suited to children. In addition, so-called functional orthodontic appliances (FKO), such as Fränkel appliances or activators, can be used in the treatment. These are removable braces that sit loosely in the mouth and, for example, by activating the muscles and repositioning the jaws in relation to one another, bring about an everyday correction and harmonization of the entire chewing apparatus.

The treatment process with removable braces
We want to make orthodontic therapy with removable braces as pleasant as possible for you. That is why we tell you about the treatment steps in our dental practice in advance. If you have any further questions, you are of course welcome to contact us at any time.
Initial consultation and information: Before we begin treating your malocclusion, we have a detailed conversation with you. In this conversation, we explain the course of our treatment to you in detail and answer all of your questions.
Thorough examination and diagnosis: We attach a great deal of importance to a thorough examination of your teeth and your dentition. Only in this way can we precisely diagnose the type of malocclusion you have. An exact diagnosis is important in order to find a suitable treatment option for you and to rule out inappropriate therapy.
3D visualization of the dentition: Using state-of-the-art 3D technology, we create a virtual image of your dentition. This allows us to identify any fine details even better and to produce your braces precisely.
Receiving your first braces: At a further appointment in our dental practice, you receive your removable braces. We are happy to show you how to use and care for your removable braces most effectively. Your braces can be used by you right away.
Wear instructions and everyday integration: You can take your removable braces out at any time - even so, you should wear them as often as possible. A wear time of at least 16 hours a day is ideal if your teeth or jaws are to be moved. Only in this way can you ensure a visible result from your tooth correction.
How long treatment with removable braces takes
The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the malocclusion in each individual case. Another criterion is wearing the braces consistently - the more regularly you wear them, the more quickly the teeth can be adjusted. On average, treatment with removable braces takes about one to two years. Various factors have to be taken into account over the course of the treatment, such as a high level of wearing comfort combined with good orthodontic results.

FAQs – frequently asked questions about removable braces
What does treatment with removable braces cost?
The cost of removable braces varies depending on the material and the time involved. Any repairs to the appliance should also be taken into account. The length of the treatment plays a role as well. For that reason, a more precise estimate of the costs is only possible after a personal consultation. You will receive a detailed cost estimate from us, and you can be sure that we will address your individual needs along the way.
Does health insurance cover the cost of removable braces?
Up to the age of 18, statutory health insurance covers part of the cost of treatment with braces. The severity of the malocclusion has to be taken into account, however: children and adolescents only have their treatment covered by health insurance if there is a medical necessity that goes beyond the defined malocclusion threshold for such treatment. During the initial examination, the dentist or orthodontist will measure the malocclusion and determine whether the indication required by health insurance is present.
For adults, statutory health insurance normally does not cover any of the cost. There are, however, supplementary insurance policies that may cover part of the cost incurred. It is best to find out about the options available to you before treatment begins.
Who are removable braces suitable for?
Treatment with removable braces is suitable for children and, in many cases, for adults as well. Because the braces are not attached directly to the enamel, they are also suitable for correcting sensitive teeth or for patients with enamel defects (MIH: molar incisor hypomineralization). Orthodontic treatment with removable braces is a gentle way of correcting the teeth. If you have a severe malocclusion, other options for correcting your teeth may make more sense for you. In a personal consultation, we work out together with you which method is best suited to your situation.
